I thought it would be fun to create a thread for the "unsolved mysteries" of The Lion King. ;D If there's anything about the original movie that "didn't quite make sense" to you, post it here, we'll bounce ideas around and see if we can't make sense of it all.
A couple of my own questions are...
1) Wouldn't Zazu have been suspicious of Scar, since he backhanded him into a rock wall when he offered to go for help? Wouldn't Zazu, with his big mouth, have told everyone back at Pride Rock that something wasn't quite right?
2) When Simba saw Mufasa's Ghost in the sky, he was still under the impression he was responsible for his death, right? How come the subject didn't come up when Mufasa told Simba he needed to go back?

Wow... those are good ones. ^_^ Something my mom always says right at the beginning is "Why are the animals so happy about a new predator being born? XD I'm sure it's out of respect for their ruler, but it's a good thought. ^^

1. zazu was knocked unconscious so he may have suffered from some memory loss. they use that all the time in movies. lost consciousness = what the heck happened? ta da! memory loss!
2. its been a while since i watched the film, but my impression was that it was something like a dream sequence where you dont really have any control over whats being talked about and you just "go with the flow". i know if i was Simba, i wouldnt know what to say if i saw my dad's form in the clouds talking to me XP id be like "OMG" o.O and forget everything XP

Hmm good points Toushiro.
Flexico - That's a good question too.. I couldn't figure it out in the beginning so I kind of made up a little story, that there's a law in the Pridelands that prohibits both overhunting ("greed" hunting) and the killing of young prey. That would make it easier on the prey animals and they might respect the lions for it. But I don't know.. It still seems a bit strange, doesn't it? XD
Another question I asked when I first saw the movie was why didn't the stampede recognize Simba and Mufasa and weave around them as they ran? They didn't seem to care what was in their path. But then my mom pointed out that they were running for their lives so of course they wouldn't care.. They were spooked. I guess that makes sense.

Um, sorry to just hop in, but one question I always had was why Scar ruined the Pride Lands. He'd obviously been working for it for all his life and what does he do when he gets it? He turns it to mush, therefore pretty much driving away the animals and starving the pride, and causing everybody else to pretty much hate him. And how could he have possibly made the pride lands like that anyway?

i always figured the pride lands looking the way it did in Scar's rule was more of a symbolic thing than anything else. it was just a way to show that he wasnt a pleasant king.
unpleasant king = unpleasant land
mostly a stereotype of bad rulers. its used a lot in film and stories throughout history.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I figured. If Simba came back to see happy grassland and plentiful food, he may have said, "Hey, Scar, WAZZSSSAAAAAAAPP??" instead of "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't rip you apart."

That's a really good question.
I agree that the devastated Pridelands was symbolic, but it has to be more than just that. After all, the pride was facing real issues - such as starvation. I think there are a few "benefits of the doubt" we can give to Disney here:
1. Scar was never trained to be a king. He was only attracted to the power. (Once he became king he had no idea what he was doing.) 2. Simba returned on an overcast day, which added to the "dark" look of things. 3. Simba might have returned during a drought as well. 4. And of course all those hyenas would have driven out all the other animals.
So definitely symbolic, but can be explained in other ways as well.. Still, I think Disney exaggerated a wee bit. =P

Good point about the hyenas, Ruukah, I never thought about that. Another question I just thought of. How could Nala catch up with Simba (After he left for Pride Rock) If he could have had hours upon hours to get there in the first place. I mean, he's just realizing the damage Scar did to his home and then all of a sudden BAM! There's Nala, and then WHAM! There's Timon and Pumbaa. How could he be unaware of Nala if she appeared that fast, I mean, she was practically right behind him, wouldn't she have called out his name or something? And what about Nala not being unaware of Timon and Pumbaa? Same story. Um, sorry if I'm being picky about it, just figured that I could get some really interesting answers. Sorry. And before I forget, real quick question. How did the animals know to come to Pride Rock at the beginning? I know that in the second one they heard the wind and they saw Rafiki beckoning for them to come to Pride Rock, but the first time, it just, I don't know. It irks me. =/

Rafiki is like a shaman character and probably used some kind of monkey magic to talk to the wind or something. meh, im not a very deep person lol.

"monkey magic" I have no idea, but those two words together made me lol XP In the beginning, they show Zazu flying up to pride rock. Perhaps Zazu flew around and spread the word?
