Kijana walked very quietly behind Eiros and Faraji. He didn't want to scare away the only food he'd seen in days.

"Impala," Braden whispered, barely audible. Faraji glanced at Eiros, who seemed to know exactly what to do. Silently he weaved through the tall grass to the shoreline and waited. Faraji and Braden walked a wide circle around the blissfully unaware animal, leaving Kijana behind. Several minutes passed before Eiros sprang out of cover, startling their target and sending it kicking and running toward the other two, who expertly downed it. Braden returned to Kijana when the struggle had ceased, panting heavily. "I'm pretty good, eh?" he said with a smile. "Count yourself lucky," Faraji said, smirking. "If you were on your own you'd starve. I've seen your solo hunt, Braden." The young lion laughed. "Come on," he said to Kijana. "There's no order to mealtime in Sera Imara. You can eat with us."

Kijana's ears perked up. "No order? Really? You guys are weird, but hey, it's cool with me." he said, grinning. He felt odd walking right up to the kill and eating it while adults were still eating too. Before he took a bite, he asked Faraji, "You sure this is okay? I've never um, shared a meal with adults before."

Faraji broke skin and tore a chunk of prime meat from the impala, then dropped it in front of Kijana. "Absolutely. Go ahead." Eiros swallowed what was in his mouth and looked at Kijana from the other side of the kill. "In Sera Imara everyone is equal," he said with a smile. "Except for guests. They get special treatment."

Kijana's eyes widened. "Wow!" he said, his mouth full of impala. "This is new." That was all he said. After that first bite, he realized how hungry he really was and tore into the kill. He had never eaten such good meat in all his life. "This is so much better than..." he came up for air and swallowed what he was chewing. "...Than what I got to eat at home. Nice catch you guys." he smiled at them.

Faraji, Eiros, and Braden smiled in unison. After the meal, Faraji gave his paws and muzzle a quick clean and sat gazing once again into the night sky. "We're making good time," he said. "Take a few minutes to relax and then we'll move on." Braden hung with Kijana, happy to have someone near his own age to talk to. "Hey," he said, feeling a little playful, "how about that leopard, huh? Bold move exposing himself to a bunch of lions.. Do you believe that guy? Think maybe he was up to somethin'?"

"I dunno. I thought he was ok, but it was the way he left that kinda freaked me out. He didn't even say he was leaving! Actually, I kinda wish he had come with us...maybe he wasn't comfortable around all us lions." Kijana didn't know what else to say about Chimelu, so he pinned the question to Braden: "What did you think of him?"

"Well..." Braden stepped closer to him as if he didn't want anyone else to hear what he was about to say. "Leopards are tricky creatures, masters of stealth. Think about it. What would make a single leopard brave enough to jump down in the midst of lions...unless he wasn't really alone?" Just as he finished speaking there was a loud rustle in the grass nearby. The noise immediately attracted Faraji's attention. A gust of wind blew over them and then all was calm. Was the rustling they heard only the result of the wind, or was there something else lurking nearby? This was the question on all of their minds as their eyes scanned the area for clues.

The fur on Kijana's neck stood on end. He sniffed the air, but couldn't pick up any new scents. Everything was so still, so quiet. Then they heard it again. "What....or who could it possibly be?" Kijana shivered at the thought. Suddenly, a bird flew out of some nearby bushes, startling Kijana. After realizing what it was, he relaxed. "Well," he whispered to Braden, "I'm glad it was only a bird." But what Kijana didn't know was the bird was simply a decoy. Something else was hiding nearby.
