I'm not sure where this thread would go, but I got a crazy idea Wednesday night and it sparked a TLK fanfic. The crazy idea was: "If Simba didn't live, what would happen then?" I've pretty much started at the stampede scene, cause that's when he would die.... ahem anyway... so tell me what you think.
"Long live the king!" Were Scar's only words of goodbye to his dear brother. He sat back and watched Mufasa fall to his death, screaming. "Noble way to go," he thought, "attempting to save the life of another." Scar's ears twitched as he picked up on a different sound; someone else screaming nearly as loud as Mufasa had. He looked over to where he heard the sound coming from, and he drew in his breath sharply. "It can't be!" he gasped. "Simba!" for there was his nephew, scrambling down toward Mufasa as fast as he could go. "No! What went wrong?" Scar thought. Instantly he got an idea. He started making his way down the side of the gorge, completely camouflaged by the dust that still hung in the air.
Waiting for just the right moment to appear, Scar could see both Mufasa and Simba clearly from his hiding spot. Watching Simba trying to get his dad to wake up almost made Scar feel a twinge of guilt. He quickly pushed the emotion away. "I am a murderer. I cannot feel remorse." he told himself. Simba laid down next to his father, and Scar decided it was time to make his appearance.
"Simba," he whispered, "what have you done?"
"There was wildebeest and he...tried to save me...it was a-an accident...I-I didn't mean for it to happen..." his voice trailed off.
"Of course, of course you didn't." Scar fake comforted him. "No one ever means for these things to happen. But the king is dead." He looked at Simba's tear-stained cheeks, and again, had to force himself to feel no pity. "If it weren't for you, he'd still be alive."
Simba looked down, feeling worse than before. Scar gasped and Simba looked back up at him.
"What will your mother think?"
"What am I gonna do?"
"Run Simba." he let go of his nephew. "Run. Run away and never return!" To his delight, Simba turned and ran as fast as he could. Scar heard the hyenas approaching from behind, and without looking at them, he commanded, "Kill him."
Bonzai led the charge. He was so hungry that even a lion sounded good to him. Shenzi and Ed weren't far behind him. They gained on Simba quickly, and were closing in. Shenzi looked ahead of Simba to see any places he might try to escape into. There was one tiny crevice in the cliff, he might try to take that. Instinctively, she ran over to that crevice and sat in front of it just as Simba was about to jump into it. He skidded to a stop in front of her, which gave Bonzai and Ed time to come up behind him, blocking all means of escape. They all cackled eerily as they circled him like they had done at the elephant graveyard. Snapping at his legs and tail, their circle got smaller and smaller, giving Simba no room between them. "It's over, your highness." Bonzai sneered.
Simba's eyes widened in fear as the hyenas jumped on him all at the same time. "Uncle Scar!!" he screamed, but his voice was quickly hushed in blood.
Scar took his time in getting back to Pride Rock. He was king now, so he could do whatever he wanted. The scenes from that morning were playing over and over in his mind.
"Long live the king!"
"Nnnoooooo!!"
"Kill him."
"Dad!"
"Run away and never return!"
"Uncle Scar!!"
"Long live the king!"
"Dad!"
"Uncle Scar!!" Simba's pitiful cry for help rang in his ears. His nephew was dead now. He could have cared less about his brother, but he almost felt sad that Simba was gone. "Uncle Scar!!" he heard again. This time it drove stakes through his heart. "What have I done?" he whispered. He trudged on, still thinking about Simba.
"Scar!" someone shouted from behind him. He turned and saw the three hyenas standing there. Well, two were standing there, Ed was trying to figure out why his spots wouldn't come off his fur when he licked them. Shenzi stepped forward, looking Scar in the eyes. "You're not feeling bad are you?" she said sharply.
"Of course not." He straightened up. "I'm just tired."
"Good. You can't feel bad for what's happened; after all, it was your idea." she taunted.
"I don't feel bad. I'm king now, which is what I wanted."
"That's nice. What I really came to see you about is us. The whole clan is waiting at the border. Just give us the word and we'll tell them they can come into the Pridelands."
"Not yet, tell them to come in at dusk. Find hiding places around the Pride Rock. When the lionesses gather for the hunt, I'll tell them of the 'accident'. Then, when I give the word, you'll all come out."
"Fine." she said, then trotted away, Ed and Bonzai following. Scar watched them leave, and when they dissappeared into the grass, he continued heading towards Pride Rock, faster than before. Suddenly he stopped mid-stride and changed directions. He decided to go to the elephant graveyard instead. "Shenzi is right," he thought. "I can't feel bad. What's done is done."
Rafiki was in his tree drawing on a branch. He was making the story of the latest thunderstorm that had hit the Pridelands. Mumbling to himself, he smudged some color into the clouds with his thumb. Zazu suddenly flew in, obviously in a panic. "Zazu, what is the matter?"
"Mufasa is dead!" he blurted. "Simba too!" He covered his face with his wing and sobbed.
"No! How?
"Simba was in the middle of a wildebeest stampede. I was with Mufasa when Scar came and told us. Of course, we followed him there and I saw Simba stuck on a branch..." Zazu stopped and took a deep breath. Rafiki offered him some water, but Zazu didn't drink. "No thank you. So then, after I told Mufasa where I had seen him, he jumped down into the stampede. I must have blacked out because I don't remember anything after that. All I know is when I woke up, Mufasa lay dead in the gorge, and Simba was nowhere to be found. I searched for him, naturally, and found..."
"What? What?"
"I found what was left of him." he cried.
"Oh, Zazu! This is terrible!" Rafiki said. He started stroking his beard, thinking hard. "Wait, what was left of him? What exactly was left?"
"Only bones, but I know it was him."
"Bones? He couldn't have decomposed that quickly. The hyenas got to him, I bet. Where was Scar when you came to?"
Zazu stopped crying for a moment. "I didn't see him at all, but what does that..."
"Don't you see?" he interrupted, still stroking his beard. "Scar would be the natural heir to the throne if Mufasa and Simba were killed. He delivered the message to you and Mufasa that Simba was in trouble. When you awoke, he was nowhere to be seen."
"I never really liked Scar myself, but I don't think he would kill his own brother. Especially not Simba! In fact, I overheard him last night offering to hang out with Simba this morning and...." Zazu was beginning to see what Rafiki was talking about. "You don't think he planned this, do you?"
"I'm going to find out right now. I'm going to have a talk with Scar." He began climbing out of his tree. When he reached the bottom, Shenzi, Bonzai, Ed, and a few other hyenas cut off his path.
"We heard what you said, monkey. Take him to king Scar for judgement!" Shenzi commanded. She knew Zazu was still up in the tree, so she pretended to leave with the other hyenas, but stayed hidden near the tree waiting for him. She didn't have to wait long. "Oh, this is bad." she heard him say. He flew to the ground and hopped a few steps, lifted his wings and flew low over the grass. "He's making this too easy." Shenzi chuckled. When he flew close to where she was, she jumped up, snatched him out of the air, and tore him to bits. "One down, two to go." she said, and started making her way towards the elephant graveyard.
Nala was well hidden behind a small bush. Slowly she crept along, her eyes fixed on her prey. One step at a time. Closer, and closer....then she pounced! and landed on Sarafina's tail. "Gotcha Mom!" she laughed, prancing around.
"You sure did!" she said. She smiled at Nala, who was going for her fifth round at "hunting". When Nala dissappeared behind another plant, Sarafina looked up at the promontory of Pride Rock. Sarabi was pacing back and forth up there, obviously worried. Sarafina got up and started walking towards her. She was careful not to actually step onto the promontory, only royalty was allowed. "Sarabi, what's got your tail all in a twist?" she asked.
"It's Mufasa. He was supposed to be back by now. He never takes this long to patrol the Pridelands. Do you think something's happened?" Sarabi looked at her best friend.
"Sarabi, if something had happened, Zazu would have come back here immediately and told you. You know that." she said, trying her best to be comforting.
"You're right," she said, once again looking out over the savannah. "He's fine.....No! he's not fine! I feel in my bones that something's wrong!" Sarabi started hyperventilating.
"Sarabi! Calm yourself!" Sarafina wanted so much to run up to Sarabi and hug her, but she still stood on the promontory. "Sarabi, come here." she lifted a paw. Sarabi padded over to her, and cried into her shoulder. "I just know he's hurt or something." she whispered. "I feel it."
Nala had crept along behind her mother, and had heard the entire conversation. Now she watched them from behind a rock. She had never seen her queen so broken. "It must really be true for Sarabi to be as sad as she is." Nala thought. She started quietly sneaking away; she didn't want to see anymore. "You're just still shook up about the hyena incident last night. Everything's gonna be alright." she heard her mother say. Nala made her way around the back of Pride Rock, looking for something to get her mind off the situation. "I know! I'll find Simba and we can play tag." she thought. She bounced around looking for him when she remembered something. Scar had offered to keep an eye on him this morning, and she had seen them leaving Pride Rock together. Nala sighed. "So I guess I'll have to wait 'till he gets back." she said to no one in particular.
"Scar!" Bonzai called. "Hey boss, you here?"
"What?" Scar said, annoyed.
"We've brought someone to see you." he said as he shoved Rafiki forward. "He knows."
Scars eyes narrowed. "Knows what, hyena?" he boomed. Bonzai backed away, his head low. A gyser erupted behind Scar and Ed yelped.
"I know what happened to Mufasa and Simba." Rafiki said boldly. Scar pretended to be upset. He hung his head and sighed. "It's terrible, Rafiki. I jus...."
"Don't say another word." Rafiki interrupted. "You did this. I know it. You did it so you could be king." Scar became very angry. He slapped Rafiki across the face, leaving four little gashes on his cheek. "How could I have? Sure I wanted to be king, but never at the cost of my brother and nephew!" he hissed. "How dare you accuse me of such a thing!"
"But you did. We both know it." the mandrill returned. "You can't lie to me and get away with it."
"Take him away. We can't have him spreading the word." By this time, Shenzi had entered. Scar looked in her direction and gave her a nod saying, "You know what to do." He stalked away from the hyenas and Rafiki. Scar was furious. What if someone else found out? Like Zazu! "He's probably got it all figured out by now and has already told Sarabi!" he thought. "Shenzi!" he yelled. "Shenzi wait!" She turned her head to look at him. "What?"
"Do you know where Zazu is? I'm afraid he might know too."
"He does. Well, he did." She gave Scar an evil grin. "But that was before he became an afternoon snack." She looked to where Bonzai and the other hyenas were leading Rafiki away. "Now it's time for the main course." she said as she trotted off.
"Four in one day." he whispered. "It's getting dark now; I should probably head towards Pride Rock before they start their hunt." he thought to himself, but before he left, he watched the hyenas' shadows play off the walls of the graveyard. He wondered what would become of the Pridelands if he let such distructive creatures enter. "Ah, it's no big deal." he told himself. "Everything's going according to plan." He turned and headed for Pride Rock, the center of his kingdom.
"He's still not back, Sarafina." Sarabi said, sitting next to her. "He always sends us off on our hunt."
"I don't know what to say, Sarabi. I'm really worried now."
"Scar hasn't come back with Simba yet either."
"Here comes Scar now!" one of the lionesses said. Scar trudged up to them slowly, as if he were in a trance. He sat down on a rock and the pride gathered around him. He still didn't speak.
"Scar, what's wrong? What's happened?" Sarabi pleaded.
"There was a stampede..." he paused an looked into her eyes. His eyes watered and a single tear ran down his scarred cheek. "Simba was caught in the midst of the wildebeest...Mufasa tried to save him, but it was just too late...for the both of them."
"No." Sarabi gasped. This was all too unreal for her.
"That's not all!" Scar sobbed. "Zazu died too! And when Rafiki heard the news, he hung himself in his tree!" More tears fell from his eyes. "I couldn't leave him there, so I buried him."
"You're sure Mufasa and Simba are...are...dead?" Sarabi's voice shook.
"Positive." Scar said, nodding. "Mufasa's death is a terrible tradgedy; but to lose Simba who had barely begun to live..." he took a breath. "For me, it is a deep, personal loss. So it is with a heavy heart that I assume the throne. Yet out of the ashes of this tradgedy, we shall rise to greet the dawning of a new era..." Scar jumped onto the promontory as hundreds of hyenas came out of nowhere, surrounding Pride Rock on all sides. "...In which lion and hyena come together in a great and glorious future!"
Nala buried her face in her mother's strong forelegs. After what happened in the elephant graveyard, she was terrified of hyenas. Sarafina put one paw over her back, and scooted closer to Sarabi, her own eyes wide with terror. Sarabi looked at Sarafina, then at Scar who sat on the edge of Pride Rock. He was hunched over, looking pitiful. This was the only time he was allowed to show his true emotions. He did feel bad about losing Simba, and even Mufasa. He figured the emotion would go away over time though, when he was too busy enjoying being king.
"Straighten up Scar. You're king; act like it!" Shenzi commanded, standing behind him on the promontory.
"This is for, uh, show, Shenzi. I have to act upset." He turned around to face her. "And, like you said, I'm the king! Don't tell me what to do! Get off my rock!" he growled. Shenzi backed away snarling. Scar had never been that upset with her before, and she didn't like it one bit. "Now!" he yelled. She turned tail and ran, still fuming.
"One day, the Pridelands will be mine, Scar." Shenzi thought. "I'll snatch your kingdom right out from under your nose. You just wait...just wait."
